The red-crab bloom off the west coast of Baja California, Mexico

Hydroacoustic data indicate that the benthic red crab Pleuroncodesplanipes(Stimpson, 1860) rises from the bottom towards the surfaceat dusk from very compacted patches settled on the continentalshelf. The behaviour is fast and abrupt, lasting >60 min.     

Dimeric chromenes and mixed dimers of a chromene with euparin from Encelia canescens

The investigation of Encelia canescens afforded, in addition to several known compounds, four new dimeric p-hydroxyacetophenone derivatives, two epimeric chromene dimers and two epimeric mixed dimers of euparin and encecalin. Furthermore, derivatives of tremetone and of encecalin were present. The structures were elucidated hy high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy.     

The effects of inhibitors of protein synthesis on incorporation of lipids into myelin

Abstract— Following intracranial injections of puromycin, the incorporation of [³H]leucine into brain protein was inhibited by 80 per cent. Conversely, incorporation of [³⁵S]sulphate into sulphatide or [2-³H]glycerol into phosphatidyl choline was not inhibited. Under these conditions, appearance of labelled protein in myelin was inhibited by 90 per cent, while the appearance of newly labelled sulphatide and phosphatidyl choline in myelin membrane was not greatly affected. Experiments with cycloheximide gave similar results with phosphatidyl choline, but incorporation of [³⁵S]sulphate into total sulphatide was decreased by about 30 per cent in animals given cycloheximide. Neither puromycin nor cycloheximide had any inhibitory effect on galactocerebroside sulphotransferase.     

Stephanbeckia plumosa (Liabeae: Compositae): A new genus and species from southern Bolivia

Material from southern Bolivia, recently collected by Stephan Beck, is described as a new genus and species, Stephanbeckia plumosa (Compositae: Liabeae). Both morphological and molecular data place the genus in the broadly interpreted subtribe Paranepheliinae, but clearly distinct from other members. It differs morphologically by its small size, deciduous plumose pappus, lack of paleae, and compressed bicostate achenes. A key to the genera of the Liabeae is provided.     

Linearity of the accumulation of various dosages of uranium in the major organs of mature male Japanese quail. Effect of various doses of estradiol-17 beta

1. Male Japanese quail were given 2.20 x 10(-4)-14.53 mg uranium/kg intravenously as uranyl ion (235U label). 2. The relationship between dosage and the 18-hr accumulation of U in leg bones, liver, kidneys and testes was linear. 3. Increases in U deposition with increased dosage were approximately 1:1, except for kidneys where 10-fold increases in dosage resulted in 25-fold increases in deposition. 4. Estradiol-17 beta increased U deposition in bones by 15-fold thereby providing some protection for the kidneys as now the ratio of dosage to accumulation was 1:1.
